MASTER WEAVER
ABOUT ARMANDO SOSA, MASTER WEAVER
Artist Armando Sosa creates hand-woven, vividly colored tapestries and textiles that reflect the themes and imagery of his Guatemalan heritage. Drawing from dreams and memories, his work incorporates traditional icons and figures, both religious and secular, from his Mayan or pre-Columbian roots, as well as his childhood in Central America. His designs are further influenced by African textiles, European Jacquard patterns, and Renaissance tapestry details.

NEW COMMISSION-- Pompeii II
I’m happy to share a recently finished commission— a 3 x 6 ft tapestry woven in cotton and silk.
This piece, Pompeii II, brings together several motifs that have accompanied me since my earliest years at the loom: pairs of peacocks and doves, a girl jumping rope, and lyres—all traditional designs from the Guatemalan Highlands. I combined these with Fortuny-inspired floral patterns, and framed the tapestry with celadon-green Renaissance architectural borders.
Every section was woven thread by thread, on my floor loom here in Hopewell. My thanks to the collector who entrusted me with this project. It’s always an honor to bring a new tapestry into the world.
